A Workbench Pet
Proposed name
AmiPet
Full description
How about one of these new computer pets for the Amiga? We could have a little window with this pet, which would need feeding and attention and....... well, you get the idea.... Just a little bit of fun, really :-))

This has been in development by LJS (Lee Atkins) for a while and is currently on the Aminet. game/wb/amipet.lha There are also plug in graphics for the pet game/wb/amipet??.lha

Have seen some of those pocket things that vibrate like a pager, thing is they vibrate loudly AND beep!

I would like to see an Amiga version of Dogz and Catz. This program would be much better than the Mac/PC version because the dog or cat could roam around the Workbench (or onto any other screen you may have open) without being restricted to a window. These programs (Dogz and Catz) are from a company called "PF.Magic". Perhaps the programmer(s) could get the source from this company and produce an Amiga version. You can see how this program works by running it through a Mac emulator. Then after seeing how they did it for an inferior computer, it can be much improved for the Amiga! :)

Bug report: When a pet dies in double size and I try to start a new one, program uses messed up normal size graphics. (If I quit and restart it opens a small window with normal graphics.) Talking of sizes, how about an interlace mode? And talking of bugs, why doesn't someone make a set of graphics depicting a BUG?? (The "Naughty" animation could show it using a PC...);)

Later experiments proved a bit more successful. Seems the program didn't work because the config file had got messed up. But once I messed it up on purpose just to se what would happen, it worked but reported a negative age! A bit more checking seems to be a good idea. A couple of ideas to make (cyber)life easier: Thanks to the menu shortcuts I can do almost everything from the keyboard, which makes it a bit impractical to reach for the mouse just to close the statistics window. Would it be possible to make it close when a key is pressed? (Well, I know it's possible as I have seen other programs do it, the question is are you going to do it!):) And reaching for the other Alt key to choose which direction to play (?) is a bit awkward too. Why not just have two menu choices? I noticed L and R are not used yet...

I tried dl'ing the program and found it to be a more recent version of the b/w sloth in a small box (a case for the SPCA?) that I killed a dozen of so of earlier. I haven't killed any of the new version yet because the **** things doesn't work, it just flashes a dot in the corner. Anyway I like Simon's ideas - dragging your pet (kicking and howling?) into a tub is much more fun than just selecting "clean" from the menu. Not to mention clicking one button three times and another button once. Taking the basic idea of something and doing it our own way is much better than emulating an inferior system.

Why the pet has to live in a window? Well, would you believe it's afraid of the dark? ;)

Why does this pet have to live in a window? Why not let it roam the whole Workbench screen. Picture this: The 'creature' can move anywhere on the WB screen; it's feeding/playing/vet/etc buttons are app-icons, along with an app-window for the stats. The pet can get your attention in the usual ways, but gets to act more like a real creature in that it can move around.. if it is in a bad mood, it can hide behind a window... if it is *really* hungry/etc it could even scratch against the feeding icon... maybe it could even have favorite places on the screen, where it likes to sleep, eat, etc... I could go on, but I won't... Basically, it would just be a whole lot more 'real' than keeping it in a tiny little window.

One advantage (?) with a pocket cyberpet is that you can take it anywhere and it beeps for attention whenever it needs something. (Just a thought; anyone ever thought of making one that vibrates the way some pagers do?) A computer pet is really only accessible when the computer is on, which may be a problem if you don't use it every day. I have two Amigas that I use more or less alternately, and the pet I installed (from a recent AF CD) has a tendency to turn up dead whenever I switch to that computer after using the other for a while. People who use their computers less frequently would prefer a pet that goes into stasis whenever the computer is turned off, so that whenever the program is restarted no time will have passed in the creature's world since the last time it saved its variables. A switch to make the pet live in real time or, uh, "fake" time looks like a good idea. And to get really interested in one of these creatures I 4 1 would require it to offer some feedback on everything I do. The pet I just killed half a dozen of doesn't seem to react when I feed it (but presumably resets a counter internally), and the statistics window only tells me howe long it's been alive. Living in a Workbench window is Ok if it's got enough colours, but another nice option would be to have it living on its own 256 colour screen and perhaps use a sprite or two to peek around the edge of the front screen whenever it feels neglected (or maybe even pop its own screen to the front). And by all means don't bother to emulate the two button interface!

I would be interested in helping you with any graphics you need. Please E-mail me: hcarroll@lcc.net. Make it attention Jerry and tell me what you have so far, what you want, etc. I am a devoted Amigan with some great graphics credits, including graphics work for the 1988 Summer Olympics.

Since my brother kindly put me forward I have dug out the source and I recon its nearly complete. Depending on free time ETA is about end of next week! This also depends on someone drawing GFX! (Hint Ash!) Also the end user can customize the pet by drawing his/her own GFX

This has been started by Loony Juice software and is in early stages of development. It might not even be finished but the ideas there.
